The First Thing to Check (Seriously, Start Here)

Missing a Slack ping can mean missing a deadline, so it’s one of the most common Slack complaints, but the cause is almost always a setting rather than a bug. The fix I forget most often, and the one I’d check first if I were you: individual channels can be muted without realizing it, sometimes from a single accidental click weeks previously. It’s the single most common cause I’ve personally encountered.

Open the channel where you’re missing notifications, click the channel name at the top, and check Notification preferences. If it’s set to anything other than what you expect (often defaulting to ‘Nothing’ after an accidental mute), almost certainly check this before touching anything else on this page.

All the Reasons This Happens

In addition to a muted channel, the usual suspects are:

1-Slack’s own Do Not Disturb mode being switched on, sometimes deliberately and simply forgotten about

2-Incorrect global notification preferences, set once during onboarding and never revisited

3-OS-level notification permissions being blocked, from initial setup or a system update that reset app permissions

4-Battery optimization on mobile silently killing the app in the background, increasingly aggressive on newer Android versions specifically

5-A workspace-wide notification schedule (covered below) – a newer Slack feature that many long-time Slack users haven’t noticed exists

6-An active Huddle suppressing notifications – another point that most guides don’t mention at all

Fix It Step by Step

1-Check Do Not Disturb. Click your workspace name in the top-left, and check whether Pause Notifications is currently active – it’s easy to turn it on and forget about it.

2-Review your global notification preferences. Click your profile picture, then Preferences, then Notifications. Confirm ‘All new messages’ or your preferred option is selected under ‘Notify me about.’

3-Check individual channel settings. Open the channel, click the channel name at the top, and check Notification preferences (set per-channel) – this is the single most common cause of ‘missing’ notifications.

4-Fix OS-level permissions. On Windows or Mac, check your system notification settings and confirm Slack is allowed – on mobile, check app permissions and disable battery optimization for Slack specifically.

5-Check for a notification schedule. Under Preferences → Notifications, look for a ‘Notification schedule’ or ‘working hours’ section – if it’s enabled and set to a limited window, notifications outside that window won’t come through even though everything else looks correctly configured.

6-Confirm keyword notifications are set up correctly, if you rely on them, under ‘My keywords’ in notification preferences – a typo or outdated keyword here silently means you stop getting pinged for terms you think you’re still tracking.

7-Reinstall the app as a last resort. If none of the above works, fully uninstalling and reinstalling Slack resolves stuck notification tokens more often than you’d expect.

Your Operating System Might Be the Real Culprit

This is a genuinely underreported cause in 2026: both Windows and macOS have become far more aggressive with system-wide focus and notification management, and can silently suppress Slack notifications.

On Windows,

Focus Assist (accessible from Settings → System → Focus assist) can be set to automatically activate during certain hours, when duplicating a display for presentations, or when playing a game – and while active, can suppress notifications from apps, including Slack, even if Slack’s own settings are configured correctly. Checking whether Focus Assist has an automatic rule currently active is worth doing if notifications seem to disappear at certain times of day.

On macOS,

Focus modes (Work, Personal, Do Not Disturb, or custom) work similarly, and it’s possible to have allowed Slack notifications through one Focus mode but not another, especially if you’ve set up multiple custom Focus profiles for different contexts. Checking Settings → Focus, and confirming Slack is explicitly allowed in whichever Focus mode is currently active, catches this specific and easily overlooked cause.

Slack-Specific Things Most Guides Miss

Huddles suppress notifications while active. If you’re in a Slack Huddle (Slack’s built-in audio/video call feature), incoming notifications from other channels are deliberately quieted so they don’t interrupt your call.

Slack Connect channels (shared with external organizations) sometimes have separate notification defaults from your regular internal channels. If you’re missing notifications specifically in a channel shared with a partner company or client, check that channel’s notification preferences individually – Slack may occasionally apply more conservative defaults to Connect channels than internal ones.

A workspace admin’s default notification policy can reset after certain changes – a setting you customized previously may quietly revert to a workspace default. This is less common but worth knowing if notifications that used to work suddenly stop after a Slack update rolls out.

Desktop vs Mobile: Why They Behave Differently

Slack deliberately suppresses mobile push notifications when it detects your desktop app is active – to avoid duplicate alerts – and is exactly the reason for one of the most frequently asked questions about this topic. If your desktop app is open (even minimized, in some cases), and appears ‘active’ to Slack’s servers, your phone intentionally stays quiet.

On the mobile side specifically, notification grouping on both iOS and Android has changed how bundled notifications appear – several Slack messages arriving close together may collapse into a single grouped notification rather than showing individual messages. This can make it look like some messages never generated a notification at all, when they actually did, just collapsed into a group you might have swiped away without opening.

If notifications work for some channels but not others, it’s almost always the per-channel setting rather than anything global – check that first. If absolutely nothing works, signing out completely and back in refreshes your entire notification session from scratch.
